MEDIUM ENERGY PHYSICS
Prof. Bassaleck's group has involved undergrads in its research for several years, and remains very interested in cultivating more students' involvement. The Medium Energy Physics group is involved in several experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory and elsewhere trying to further understand the fundamental structure of nuclear matter and of hadrons themselves. We have a wide scope of research interests from understanding the nature of hot/dense nuclear matter as it may have existed moments after the Big Bang, to understanding the nature of spin in the nucleon, to exploring the nature of fundamental symmetries by looking at weak decays of strange particles. Undergraduates have been involved in our group for several years and have made contributions that have led to published papers. We continue to have projects that are suitable for undergraduate research experience in the following areas:

     Detector research and development
Detector and electronics construction and testing
     Physics simulations of detector performance
     Data analysis software development
Experiment operations and data taking (at BNL, Spring break and summer opportunities)
     Data analysis

Please contact Bernd Bassalleck or Doug Fields for further information.
