Workshop TSOCS-2004
A workshop on
"Transport and Self-Organization in Complex Systems" was
held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from August 8 to 12, 2004. It was organized
by the Consortium of
the Americas for Interdisciplinary Science (CAIS) of the University
of New Mexico (UNM), USA, in collaboration with two Brazilian institutes:
the Instituto de Fisica
of the Universidade de Brasilia (IF-UNB) and the Instituto de Fisica
of the Universidade
Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (IF-UFRGS). The site of the workshop
was the Hotel Novotel in Porto Alegre where the participants were also lodged.
This was one of the many workshops organized and/or supported by the CAIS which is a Center of the University of New Mexico with a mission, recognized and supported by the National Science Foundation and other institutions, to foster international collaborations in interdisciplinary science between Latin American scientists and scientists in the USA.
This workshop was additionally supported by Brazilian agencies
like CNPq and CAPES. The goal of the workshop was to organize a gathering of a small group of interdisciplinary
researchers. The workshop comprised a few invited speakers, and contributed
talks and poster sessions. Contributions were encouraged in the application of
physics to phenomena on the cellular level, of statistical mechanics to epidemiology
and ecology, of mathematical methods to financial and other data involving human
interactions, and of network theory to various transport problems that arise
in complex systems. Generally the workshop addressed the physics of biological
systems including mathematical ecology, the interface between physics and social
sciences including econophysics, and anomalous transport and transport on complex
networks. Reports on experimental work which poses real challenges to the theorists,
and theoretical work directed at available or observable data in the variety
of disciplines mentioned above, were particularly welcome in this workshop.
