Homework Assignments I - X
PHYSICS 161
Homework Assignments I - X , prior to the first Exam
There is a homework assignment due (almost) every class period!
If on paper, they should be turned in at the alphabetically-labeled box
at the front of the classroom, before
class begins!
If on WebAssign, they are due at 1 A.M. of the night in question.
So a WebAssign(ment) due on, say, Friday, is due no
later than 1 hour after Midnight on that Friday, i.e., at 1 A.M.
Saturday morning.
Also note that the days of the week, and of the months, for due dates
are given in Spanish.
No. I: due on miercoles, 21 de agosto
- Paper problems:
Chapter 19:
Question 2; Problems 4E and 11E.
These concern conversions between degrees Fahrenheit and degrees Celsius,
and also expansions/contractions because of temperature changes.
- There are no WebAssign problems yet. However, you should go
and log on, and register, as soon as you determine your username and
password. See the directions on the
WebAssign directions page.
Solutions to HW 1 may be accessed after they are due,
by clicking right here.
No. II: due on viernes, 23 de agosto
- Paper problems:
Chapter 19: Question 5, Problem 49E,
both of which consider work and pV-diagrams.
- There is one WebAssign problem due tonight [1 A.M., Saturday morning
very early, or, if you prefer, Friday night rather late].
It concerns specific heats.
Please take this one problem as an occasion to make sure you
understand how to work this system.
See the directions on the
WebAssign directions page.
Solutions to HW 2 may be accessed after they are due, by clicking
right here.
Since they include the WebAssign problems, the due date is early
Saturday morning; this statement will also, of course, be true for
the remainder of the solution sets as the semester continues.
No. III: due lunes, 26 de agosto
- Paper problem:
A container made of some metal has a mass of 3.1 kg, and contains
19 kg of water. The container and water initially
have a temperature of 10.0°C. A 1.7 kg piece of the metal,
initially at a
temperature of 190°C, is dropped into the water. The combined
system now comes to equilibrium at a final temperature of 18.0°C.
Use this data to calculate the specific heat of the metal in question.
- There are three problems due on WebAssign tonight
[1 A.M., Tuesday morning, very early], on calorimetry and pV-diagrams.
Complete solutions to HW 3 may be accessed by clicking right here.
No. IV: due miercoles, 28 de agosto
- There are no paper problems due today.
- There are three WebAssign problems.
- The first is on work, heat and
energy on a pV-diagram, yet again. It is rather long.
- The second is on heat conduction, and is quite easy.
- The third is on heat transfer via radiation.
Complete solutions to HW 4 may be accessed by clicking
right here.
No. V: due viernes, 30 de agosto,
- There is one paper problem for today, Chapter 20: Problem 10E,
concerning work done by ideal gases.
- There are 3 WebAssign problems, one simple one
concerning different kinds of thermodynamic processes, and two
concerning ideal gases.
Complete solutions to HW 5 may be accessed, after they are due, by clicking right here.
No. VI: due miercoles, 4 de septiembre
- There is one paper problem, Chapter 20: Problem 39,
on root-mean-square speeds [rms speeds].
- on WebAssign there are 4 problems: one on a simple ideal gas,
one on translational kinetic energy, one on work, and one on
adiabatic and isothermal processes.
Complete solutions to HW 6 may be accessed, after they are due, by clicking right here.
First Bonus Problem:
is now assigned,
and may be accessed at this webpage.
It is due in one week, i.e., on 13 September.
Note that there are 3 different parts to the problem. The first is
a set of accurate graphs, while the other two are algebraic and
numerical calculations.
Recall that Bonus Problems are to be turned in individually,
rather than in a group.
Also recall that completely correct solutions are worth 1 week's worth
of homework.
After that date, the solution will be at
this webpage.
No. VII: due viernes, 6 de septiembre,
- There are no paper problems due today.
-
There are 2 questions and 2 problems due are on WebAssign,
due at 1 AM as usual:
Complete solutions to HW 7 may be accessed,
after they are due, by clicking right here.
No. VIII: due lunes, 9 de septiembre,
- There is 1 (proof) problem on paper, due at classtime:
Chapter 20: Problem 57E
- On Webassign, there are
-
2 problems, from Chapter 20, and
- 1 question, from Chapter 21, allowing us to begin this subject.
Complete solutions to HW 8 may be accessed, after they are due,
by clicking right here.
No. IX: due miercoles, 11 de septiembre,
- No paper problems due today.
- on Webassign, due at 1 AM as usual:
-
2 questions on entropy, from Chapter 21, not hard but requiring thought,
- 1 problem on processes on a T-V diagram (instead) of the more
usual p-V diagram. [You do NOT need to give the requested explanation.]
- 1 problem on entropy calculations.
Complete solutions to HW 9 may be accessed, after they are due,
by clicking right here.
No. X: due viernes, 13 de septiembre,
- There is one paper problem, Chapter 21, Problem 27P.
due this morning,
dealing with the efficiency of ideal (non-Carnot) engines.
- on WebAssign, for tonight there are 4 problems,
The first one is rather tricky,
so please pay attention to the hint.
The remainder concern entropy, and engines.
Complete solutions to HW 10 may be accessed, after they are due,
by clicking right here.

FIRST EXAM will be on Friday,
20 September.
-
Coverage will be Chapters 19-21, all of Thermodynamics
- Solutions may be accessed here.
