Tutorials in Introductory Physics

Physics 151: General Physics 1 Lecture

This is the first of a two-part introductory general physics course intended for non-physics majors. The main topics of the course are mechanics, thermodynamics, waves, and fluids.

Note that most course material can be found online in WebCT
Web-based homework assignments can be found in Mastering Physics or WebCT
Please check the course calendar in WebCT regularly

The goals of the course are to:

  • Develop critical and analytical thinking abilities
  • Learn fundamental physics concepts
  • Enable quantitative and qualitative analyses of these physics concepts
  • Develop an appreciation of physics in everyday life

The course is uses the text book: College Physics, 1st edition by Knight, Jones, and Field shown at right.

Knight College Physics text

Learning Resouces/Materials:

  • Textbook: Knight, Jones, and Field, College Physics, 1st edition
  • Mastering Physics Licence
  • Student Workbook
  • Tutorials in Introductory Physics
  • Tutorials in Introductory Physics homework
(all of the above are in the textbook bundle available at the bookstore by August 29)

  • an iClicker (available at the bookstore)
  • a basic scientific cacluator (graphing calculators may be used during exams but must have their memories cleared before the exam starts)
  • a ruler
  • and a 3 ring binder.

Textbook notes: To keep costs low and because the 2nd edition of our textbook will be released in October (having an adverse effect on book buy-back), a looseleaf version of the textbook was selected, which you can put into the 3-ring binder. We will use the Mastering Physics homework system, the Tutorials in Introductory Physics Homework book, and assorted handouts as homework during the semester. The Tutorials in Introductory Physics will be used in the Problem Solving Sessions.

The Mastering Physics License and the Tutorials in Introductory Physics can be purchased separately. The Mastering Physics License can be purchased online and includes an electronic copy of the textbook.
