Research

I am an Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. All of my work related contact information can be found here. Here are a few of the research projects that I am currently involved in:

PHENIX

I am involved in an experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory called PHENIX. Our group has been involved in several areas:

·        Construction of Muon Tracking Station One.

·        Monte Carlo efforts.

·        Analysis Software.

·        Physics analysis.

RHIC Spin

Besides the heavy-ion program at RHIC, I have been involved heavily with the RHIC Spin program, an effort designed to investigate the spin structure of the nucleon. Our efforts here include:

·        We have been involved in an effort to design a polarimeter for the RHIC accelerator beam line.  Determining the proton beam polarization at these high energies is a difficult task, but through a series of test experiments, including a run at my alma mater, (CE75 at IUCF) and a run at the AGS at Brookhaven (E950), we have developed a polarimeter which has been implemented in the RHIC ring.

·        We have been involved in the implementation of the p+C CNI polarimeters in RHIC.

Play

The BEAT

As Feynman before me, I am a hand drummer.  I used to be in a "Middle-Eastern Urban Funk and Groove Belly-Dancing Ensemble". The BEAT, which stands for Belly Ensemble and Thunder, is still a great band, and I urge you to come watch and hear them at their next show.

Rock Climbing

When I get a chance, I enjoy rock climbing.

My Motorcycle

I have an '86 Kawasaki Concourse that I love to ride.  Some day I will get it in working condition…

Family

Wife

I am married to a wonderful woman, Gabi Niegelhell.

Family Tree

I have always wanted to set up a family tree online (as it develops).

Thunder

I can't really claim to be into the SCA too much, but the Rolling Thunder Household has treated me like family, and I consider them my local family.
