Chemical Containers
A few things you should know about Chemicals in containers at UNM:1) Every single container that you use for a chemical (especially liquids and powders), which is not the original manufacturer's container, should have one of the bright Blue, Red, and Yellow labels on it, with all information filled out on the label. If the original manufacturer's label ever becomes illegible or removed, one of the SHEA labels should immediately be affixed to the container, completely filled out.
2) No container should EVER be left unattended without a leak-proof lid, or cap on it, no matter what the content, or no matter how small a quantity in the container.
3) All containers used should ALWAYS be approved to hold the chemical placed in it. (Example: Never use a PVC container to hold acetone, or a tin container to hold battery acid)
4) All WASTE chemicals should be in an approved container with one of the SHEA Waste Management Labels affixed to it, completely filled out, and with a SECURED lid ALWAYS in the closed (secured) position on the container, except while adding to it.
5) All WASTE chemicals should be segregated in separate containers. NEVER combine ANY variety of chemicals in the same container.
6) All containers, whether original manufacturer's or one you placed the chemical into, MUST always be kept clean and free of any residue on the outside of it at all times.
