State Vehicles, Parking and operation of, at PandA
(NOTE: see bottom half of this page for Use and parking of Personal Vehicles)
All of our State of new Mexico (University of New Mexico) vehicles must be signed out from our General Services Assistant in Room 163 (Shipping and Receiving Room). The use of the vehicle must be signed out, and in, on the clipboard in his office, as well as the black book for each separate vehicle being filled out with mileages at the start and end of your use of each vehicle. Use of vehicles must be pre-recorded and pre-requested by as much time as possible to avoid conflicts of needs. Reservations will be posted on the board opposite the double doors just outside of Room 163. You MUST PROVIDE THE General Services Assistant, or myself, with your driving permit ON EVERY OCCASION OF USE, since we will be held responsible not just for your having a permit, but that you also have it with you every time you use one of our vehicles. NO EXCEPTIONS! This includes your having BOTH permits when driving the VAN.
ALL VEHICLES REQUIRE A SPECIAL STATE OF NEW MEXICO OPERATORS PERMIT AS WELL AS YOUR REGULAR STATE OF NEW MEXICO DRIVERS LICENSE. To obtain this permit you MUST sign up, take, and complete, the SHEA Defensive Driving Class at UNM or their acceptable equivalent. This is a two four hour session class. To be allowed to drive our 15 passenger van you must ALSO TAKE two classes for van drivers. There are NO EXCEPTIONS OR TEMPORARY USE PERMITS for this policy.
To sign up for the driver classes please note that you MUST attend once signed up, and if you fail to, without the SHEA specified notice, the department will be charged a $25.00 no-show fee.

Enter your SSN (You must be in the UNM registry or you will not be allowed past this point)
Click the LOGIN button
Verify your information and enter your current Physics Department Supervisors email address
Click the SAVE AND CONTINUE button
Click the "General Safety" link
Select either the Defensive Driving class, or one of the "15 Passenger Van Driver Safety" Classes and follow the links until you are registered. PLEASE NOTE----YOU MUST have the Defensive Driving Operators Permit "IN-HAND" before you will be allowed to take the 15 passenger Van classes.
Personal Vehicles and Parking at PandA
There is no free parking at Physics and Astronomy. All parking in front of the building (North and West lots) as well as all parking in our rear gated area, require displaying of an "M" Parking Permit, currently valid, in the front windshield, of any and all privately owned vehicles. All vehicles displaying the "M" Permits are also required to park ONLY at concrete bumper barriers which are NOT painted any color, or along the sidewalk to the main Yale Entrance to the front lobby area, or along the sidewalk along the south edge of the NorthWest Wing, between the white stripes.
There are temporary permits available in the front office, or from Parking Services. These permits are, however, reserved for departmental VISITORS ONLY, and the department supply of them are paid for by the deparment for our special guests.
There are also metered parking places at the far west end of the building, near the intersection of Lomas and Yale Boulevards.
The nearest, and ONLY free parking at UNM is the VISITOR's Parking Lot, located on the south edge of the main campus near Popejoy Hall and the University of New Mexico Bookstore.
