HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials) Page
This is a new page, and we will be adding to it as more information becomes available, please be patient.
There are specified requirements (by the Department of Transportation and other agencies) for shipping hazardous materials. SRS's new class on shipping and receiving hazmats is highly recommended as an introduction to these requirements. A copy of hazmat substances and waste compliance guide is equally recommended. Its tables help determine shipping names, hazard classes, identification numbers, labeling requirements, special provisions, and package specifications, all of which may be required in shipping hazmats. The guide now also contains The Emergency Response Guidebook, which is essential in case of materials spills during transport, for example.
There are even more stringent requirements for shipping by air, and especially in the wake of the September attacks, these requirements are constantly changing. A separate class is offered by The International Air Transport Association, but isn't available at UNM.
One hazmat shipping requirement is, that in all cases, a person who is knowledgeable about the particular shipment must include his/her 24 hour-a-day telephone number on the package(s) in case of emergencies.
