- Victor Gamiz (Ph.D.-Physics
and Ph.D.-Optical
Sciences, 1995) was elected to the grade of Fellow of SPIE in
December 2005.

Utah
Governor Jon M. Huntsman, Jr., has appointed
Gregory M. Jones, Ph.D., as the new State Science Advisor. The position
is part of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) and
oversees the state’s economic clusters to create jobs. Before joining
state
government, Dr. Jones was the associate director of the Scientific
Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute in Salt Lake City and an adjunct
assistant professor of Radiology at the University of Utah. He was also
president and chief operations officer of Visual Influence Inc., a
spin-off company of SCI.
- Our
sympathy to the Sepulveda family (Michael, B.S.-Astrophysics, 2004) for
the loss of Mom, Zulma, who died suddenly on September 11, 2005. She
was a very brave woman who checked herself out of the hospital shortly
after undergoing major surgery in order to attend her son's graduation
ceremony.
- Julio
R. Gea-Banacloche (Ph.D.-Physics,
1983), Professor
of Physics at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, was named a
2004 APS Fellow for his contributions to the
understanding of quantum- mechanical effects in the interaction of
light with matter, and for his valuable service to the physics
community as an associate editor of Physical
Review A.
- J.
Douglas Beason (Ph.D.-Physics,
1984) has been named Associate Director for Threat Reduction at LANL. A
former associate professor and graduate of the USAF Academdy, Doug
served on the White House staff in the Office of Science and Technology
Policy. He has been with LANL since he retired in 2001 after a
distinguised career in the Air Force.

Magazine's Minorities in Research Science: Darryl Sanchez (Ph.D.-Optical
Sciences, 1997) was honored for
'Professional
Achievement in Education' during a ceremony at the national conference
held in Nashville on September 17-18. Congratulations, Darryl!
