Class Information

Welcome to Introduction to Physics for non-science majors. Most of our efforts will be going toward learning concepts and not rigorous mathematical analysis. There is some math involved as physics relies on understanding relationships between different elements. You will find many new words as well as new meanings to old words so be prepared to learn a concise new vocabulary. Just as visiting a foreign country is more fun if you can converse with the locals so is physics.

How to Succeed in Physics-and in College Click on this link to download a pdf document that gives good tips and solid advice on how to study and improve your grades for a class such as this.

You are responsible for how much effort you put into this class and what your final grade will be. You will be held to the standards as outlined in the University Catalog in regards to dishonesty in academic matters and classroom conduct. The rules are the same as they have always been. Just remember to do your own work and don't be tempted to assist others to bend the rules. Please turn off your cell phones and wireless networking on your computers before class starts. If you feel like you must talk to someone about something besides physics please do so outside of the classroom. I plan on having exercises where you have to converse with people next to you about the subject matter of the day so there will be times for you to talk and even move about.

There will be 4 exams including the final. There will not be a chance to take a make-up exam if should you miss one. I will however drop the the lowest exam grade with exception of the final which is required.

There will be 1 term paper due the last day of class. You may turn it in at anytime during the semester. The term paper is based on your reading of one book selected from a posted list (See the Books tab). No other books will be accepted unless you receive permission first. Guidelines for the paper: Please write between 2 and 3 pages about your thoughts of the book. Make this a reflection and not a summary of the book, I know what the story is about. I would rather know what impressions this book left on your mind. As for the mechanics; please write between 2 and 3 pages using double spacing and 12 point font with 1 inch margins.

Homework will be assigned and due once a week at the beginning of class. Problems will come from the textbook and/or other sources.

Final Grades Will be Based on the Following

  Percentage Number Total
Tests 20 4 (drop the lowest) 60
Paper 20 1 20
Homework 15   15
i>clicker  5    5
Total     100

We will be using the i>clicker this semester. Your points earned for using it will be based upon whether you respond to the questions presented and not on whether your answers were correct. The idea is to stimulate a response from you. Hopefully this means that you will think about the questions and formulate an honest answer based upon your experience and knowledge. Since science is not decided by popular opinion your answer might be in the minority and correct!

I will be using WebCT Vista to post grades. To view your account just log on to My UNM and select the My Courses tab. This also a good place to contact me via e-mail or to interact with other students.
