UNM/NSF Center for Micro-Engineered Ceramics

The University of New Mexico was recently awarded a National Science Foundation Research Center which is unique in the sense that it combines researchers from two Universities (University of New Mexico and New Mexico Tech), and two National Laboratories ( Los Alamos and Sandia) to perform collaborative research on the chemistry and physics of ceramics. Ceramic materials under study include the new ceramic high temperature superconductors, structural ceramics, coatings (wear-resistant, optical, chemical protection, etc.) and electronic ceramics. The ceramics industry (both local and national) is involved in guiding and assisting CMEC's researchers. Faculty and students on the UNM campus are primarily from the departments of Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy, Geology, Chemical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Recognizing that inter disciplanary research is key to the development and understanding of new ceramic materials, much of the research conducted in CMEC is undertaken using multiple faculty/National Laboratory staff member research teams. Areas of research include sysnthesis of non-oxide ceramics via polymeric precursors, sol-gel processing, studies of the metal/metal oxide interface, aerosol and plasma processing of ceramics, sintering, microwave interactions with materials, and fractal analysis in materials science.

The Campus Observatory

The Campus Observatory is located on the northern part of the campus. It has a 12 inch, f/15 Cassegrain telescope. Astronomy labs are conducted there during the week. Every Friday while the University is in session, the public is welcome to visit. Hours are 8-10PM while Daylight Savings Time is in effect, and 7-9PM during Standard Time.

Admission is free, and graduate students and faculty mingle among the visitors to answer questions and help with the telescopes. This is one of the most popular events provided by the department.

Groups of XX or more should call at least a week in advance to arrange for special service: 277-2616.

The Campus Observatory Hot Line has a recorded message with information about the upcoming night's observing status: 277-1446

Regener Hall

The department conducts freshman and sophomore classes and laboratories in a separate physics lecture and instructional laboratory building with 14,000 square feet. One of the unique features of this building is a built-in heliostat capable of projecting a 5- to 12-foot-diameter image of the sun's disk on the lecture room wall.
