Ferocactus in Habitat

So far this page has only the one picture, but quite a nice one.

Ferocactus stainesii (Hook) Br & R.

This particular fine specimen of Ferocactus stainesii was found growing close to the roadside near Aramberri in Mexico. It was around 8 foot tall and the clump was over 10 foot in diameter. With its attractive red spines this species is deservedly popular. In cultivation in the UK the plants are quite slow and these habitat plants must be a great age. They need to be moderately large before they flower and the largest seedling plant in a particular collection, in Wales, is about 7 inches in diameter has yet to oblige.
