Understanding weather trends for planning CMB surveys

Thursday April 18, 2024
2:00 pm

 Presenter:  Katie Dalton
Series:  Center for Astrophysics Research and Technologies Seminar Series
Abstract:  Clear, stable weather is crucial for high-precision observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). While the South Pole has been an excellent site for deep CMB surveys, its geographic location limits it to observing less than 20% of the sky. Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert of Chile achieves similar high-quality observing weather, but has much more variable conditions. This study leverages weather data to provide real-time and historical metrics for CMB observations, with a goal using them as external indicators to flag potentially 'bad' or contaminated data, and to use them in survey and observation planning.
